Source: http://www.aviatime.com/en/mro/mro-news/other/10335-new-monarch-engineering-hangar-officially-opens-at-birmingham-airport
Monarch Aircraft Engineering Limited (MAEL), the award winning independent aircraft maintenance provider and division of The Monarch Group, today announces the official opening by Sir Roy McNulty, Non-Executive Director, Monarch Holdings Limited, of a brand new multi-million pound maintenance hangar at Birmingham Airport.  The facility, which is immediately creating 150 new jobs, also has the potential to add a further 150 posts.
The 110,000 sq ft state-of-the-art facility will complement the company’s existing engineering operations at London Gatwick, London Luton and Manchester Airports and supports the continuing growth of MAEL’s high quality aircraft engineering activities.
The new facility can accommodate almost every aircraft type in its two bays, incorporates industry-leading design and build standards, and is one of the first to have the capacity for Boeing 787 Dreamliner maintenance, with sufficient capacity for other wide body aircraft, such as the Boeing 777, 747 and Airbus A350.  It is large enough to accommodate two Boeing 777-300ER aircraft or 10 narrow-body aircraft and will contain a number of component-repair and back shops. The vast building, covering c2.5 acres is big enough to house four full size football pitches, 2400 Minis or 450 double decker buses.
In its first month of operation, seven different aircraft types are scheduled for maintenance in the facility, including Airbus A300, A320 and A321, Boeing 757 and 767, Embraer 195 and Bombardier Q400.

The Birmingham hangar will enable MAEL to service a greater share of the growing market for aircraft maintenance service in the UK and Europe. Its own third-party (i.e. non-Monarch Airlines) maintenance activities have grown to 31% of business in 2013 from 18% in 2010, and over the next two years this is planned to increase to almost 40% of turnover. This will consolidate MAEL’s position in the top 10 largest airframe MRO organisations in Europe

Source: http://www.aviationpros.com/press_release/11230647/monarch-aircraft-engineering-drives-further-efficiency-and-safety-with-snap-on-industrial
Monarch Aircraft Engineering (MAEL), the award-winning independent aircraft maintenance provider and division of The Monarch Group, has agreed to partner with global tooling solutions specialist, Snap-on Industrial.  The partnership sees the replacement of all MAEL engineers' personal tooling at its new maintenance facility at Birmingham Airport with Snap-on Industrial’s world leading Level 5 tool control system, providing complete security and accountability.
MAEL is one of the first aircraft maintenance providers in the UK to replace all its existing engineers’ personal tools to such an extent with company owned tooling and represents a major shift in working practices for the company.  The introduction of Snap-on Industrial's Level 5 programme of tools and tool control will help MAEL offer continued exceptional levels of safety and efficiency at the heart of its Maintenance Repair Overhaul (MRO) operations in Birmingham;
both are vital to MAEL’s customers.
The new 110,000 sq. ft. state-of-the-art facility at Birmingham Airport opened on 4th November 2013 and the preparation included an initial delivery of over 27,320 Snap-on hand and power tools.  MAEL provides MRO services for its sister company Monarch Airlines along with a number of the best known airlines around the world. It also provides base maintenance hangar facilities at London Luton Airport (headquarters), Manchester Airport and now Birmingham Airport.....In its quest to provide world class tooling solutions and to prevent Foreign Object Damage (FOD), MAEL has chosen Snap-on Industrial as its business partner of choice, introducing ‘TCMax’ asset software management programme for tool control to its Birmingham facility. Snap-on’s Level 5 programme works to counter FOD and make the workplace safer and more productive through five key measures: tool organisation, tool visibility through coloured foam inserts, tool security, tool tracking and digital tool accountability, providing a full audit trail and torque calibration schedules.
...
Within this, Networkable Tool Control (NTC) provides electronic keyless lockable tool storage units, allowing only authorised personnel to access. For the first time, MAEL will have real time visibility of the entire maintenance floor tooling inventory. All tools in the system are laser etched with an ID number linked to a specific cabinet within the TCMax asset management system, providing comprehensive tool accountability. When a tool is removed from the cabinet a unique record is generated, providing real-time inventory management including details of who is currently using each tool, on which aircraft, even to a specific area, all linked to a works order. Critical events such as calibration requests, broken or lost tools will trigger an alert including an automatic email distribution to a list of shift supervisors, ensuring immediate action to locate or its timely replacement in the case of a broken tool.

Pilots, cabin crew and MRO staff working for Monarch have voted to accept changes to pay and working conditions as a part of the group’s restructure to become a low-cost airline.
The deal follows negotiations with unions representing the UK firm’s pilots, cabin crew and engineers, and will see salaries cut by up to 30 per cent alongside alterations to shift patterns and other working conditions.
More than 90 per cent of the staff that participated in the vote agreed to accept Monarch’s proposed terms.
On Tuesday (September 23) the board of Monarch Holdings announced that Greybull Capital LLP was its preferred bidder to acquire the group from its current shareholders, principally the Mantegazza family.

Monarch Airlines (ZB, London Luton) is planning to close its Manchester Int'l MRO hangar putting over 100 jobs at risk. The airline said in a statement that US-based airline strategy specialist, Seabury, had proposed the move following an extensive study of the carrier's shape and strategy, projected demand in the MRO sector, and the commercial viability of all of Monarch Aircraft Engineering Limited (MAEL) facilities.
"As Monarch has progressed with its restructuring, it has identified further ways to optimise its operations," it said. "The Seabury review also showed that the Manchester facility is less viable than MAEL’s other hangar locations."
Manchester's operations have been severely affected by the loss of a major Jet2 (LS, Leeds/Bradford) contract last year which was responsible for the bulk of work at the facility. The hangar specializes in heavy maintenance and D checks, as well as IMV and C checks for both Airbus Industrie (AIB, Toulouse Blagnac) and Boeing (BOE, Chicago O'Hare) aircraft types including the A320 Family, the A300, the A310, the A330, and the B757 and B767.
The Unite labour union reports that in addition to the loss of 109 jobs in Manchester, thirteen engineering jobs at London Luton and several at Birmingham Int'l will also be axed.
Talks between management and representatives of its employees are currently underway.

flybe. (BE, Exeter) terminated its contract with Monarch Aircraft Engineering Limited (MAEL) on November 27, accusing the maintenance provider of unlawfully withdrawing services to the airline Flybe. has said in a press statement.

"Flybe are very disappointed by these events, which appear to have been undertaken without due consideration of our business, customers and operations, and with no legal justification," the regional airline said in a statement.

According to flybe., MAEL withdrew its maintenance services provided to the airline on November 23.

The maintenance provider responded saying that it had served a notice on its contract with flybe. in June 2018 already. Since then the parties have reportedly been negotiating a new agreement.

flybe. said that the disruption of the contract with MAEL had not jeopardised its operations as maintenance was performed in-house and contracted to other providers. MAEL provided line maintenance services for flybe.'s aircraft at Manchester Int'l and Birmingham Int'l. The carrier said it was willing to offer new jobs in its own MRO facilities at these airports to staff members who were laid off from MAEL due to the end of the agreement.

Since October 2018, MAEL has been owned by Greybull Capital LLP.

Monarch Aircraft Engineering Up For Sale James Pozzi | Dec 14, 2018
Several parties are in discussions with the MRO’s owners over a full sale or offloading certain business units.

UK-based Monarch Aircraft Engineering (MAEL) has been put up for sale by private equity group owners Greybull Capital and its board of directors, the company confirmed on Friday (Dec. 14).

MAEL says talks have begun with several potential parties from the UK and abroad with a view to selling all or parts of the business. So far, interest has been registered by potential buyers in the entire business, as well as in individual units such as its line maintenance division, CAMO services and base maintenance. No sale valuation was disclosed.

The company says its day-to-day operations won’t be affected during the sale process. Projects such as a new £2 million ($2.5 million) Northampton-based component maintenance center, which is around 80% complete, have slowed because of the sale process but will remain ongoing.

The announcement comes just two months after Greybull Capital became the group’s majority shareholder of the maintenance and engineering business, which continued operating as a standalone entity after the collapse of its airline parent in October 2017.

Last month, MAEL entered into a company voluntary arrangement (CVA) in a move to shed historic debt it inherited from its defunct airline affiliate estimated at more than £100 million. The MRO confirmed that the arrangement presented the business with “a number of challenges which need to be resolved.”
Chris Dare, managing director of MAEL, says that while the CVA successfully helped manage the inherited debt, subsequent pressures with customers led to directors and shareholders opting to put the business up for sale.

“The decision was taken post-CVA and has been driven by some of the customers’ action during that process,” he says. “There is sometimes a bit of a lack of understanding as to what a CVA is in the aviation industry as they are not as common as in other sectors such as retail,” Dare explains. One of MAEL's former customer contracts not related to this was its agreement with Flybe, which MAEL terminated on Nov. 27 following a contractual dispute.

Dare says any change of ownership would be a trade sale to another MRO business and not another private equity company. MAEL isn’t currently speaking with any OEMs looking to bolster their aftermarket services at present through MRO acquisitions, but Dare says this can’t be ruled out at some point in future.
